KF1 internet connection guide

The most important aspect of KF1 internet connectivity is the stability of the primary and secondary connections. The KF1 uses mobile internet as a secondary fallback if the primary connection fails.

Recommended connection setups

Setup 1: Wired fibre (primary) + 4G (secondary) — strongly recommended

  • No minimum speed or latency requirements for the fibre connection

  • Installer must verify secondary mobile connectivity using the KF1 indicator lights (see below)

  • Acceptable mobile signal: green connection light with 3–5 signal strength LEDs

Setup 2: Wi-Fi or 4G (primary) + 4G (secondary)

  • Not recommended — only use if wired fibre is not possible

  • If using Wi-Fi or 4G as primary, recurring interruptions will cause service failures

  • Minimum speed: 20/20 Mbit/s, latency under 50ms

  • Using 4G as primary requires extra equipment (see Mobile section below)

  • Verify secondary mobile connectivity using KF1 indicator lights (same table as above)

KF1 firewall settings

The firewall at the customer's premises must not block KF1 traffic.

  • KF1 uses several outgoing TCP and UDP ports (mostly HTTPS and MQTT)

  • Return traffic on those ports must also be allowed

  • A standard home router that does not block outgoing traffic works without problems

  • For advanced firewalls: put the KF1's network socket in the DMZ. The KF1 has a built-in firewall and protects itself and the energy storage system.

The KF1 front panel has three groups of indicator lights: LAN connectivity (under LAN1–LAN3 ports), WAN connectivity (under WAN port), and mobile status with signal strength (bottom-right corner, showing a connection status light and 5 signal strength LEDs).

LAN port lights (1 under each LAN port)

Light

Meaning

WAN port light (1 under WAN port)

Light

Meaning

Solid green

WAN cable works and router is powered — does **not** confirm internet works, always check installer app

Blinking green

Network traffic flowing (slow blinking may indicate router or ISP problem)

Black

WAN cable broken, or router is broken or unpowered

Mobile connection status light

Light behaviour

Meaning

Alternating green/red every 500ms

Wired connection

The most reliable method. Strongly recommended for all installations. Once configured, minimal maintenance is needed even if the customer changes ISP, router, or Wi-Fi password.

Important: For business customers with installations over 100 kW, the KF1 must always be connected via network cable directly to the fibre connection (router or fibre modem). A Wi-Fi bridge is acceptable if the fibre connection is in a different building, but wired is always preferred.

Instructions

1. Plug a standard network cable from the KF1 WAN port to an available LAN port on the customer's router

2. Check the KF1 WAN indicator light and installer app (may take a few minutes)

Troubleshooting

  • Solid green WAN light + no errors in installer app: Connection is stable. No further steps needed.

  • Solid green WAN light + "WAN connection offline" error in installer app: Problem with customer's router or ISP. Connect the network cable to a laptop and run a speed test at bredbandskollen.se. If the problem is confirmed, contact the customer's ISP.

  • Blinking green (very slowly): May indicate the connection is not fully working. Run a speed test at bredbandskollen.se via laptop. If there's a problem, contact the customer's ISP.

  • Black WAN light: Cable is broken, or router is broken/unpowered. Temporarily place the KF1 near the router and connect with a short factory-made cable. If the problem resolves, replace the original cable. If it persists, replace the router or contact the ISP.

Wi-Fi connection

Not recommended. Only use if wired connection is not possible or requires unreasonable effort.

  • If the customer changes their SSID, Wi-Fi password, router, or ISP, the connection will fail and must be reconfigured

  • If KF1 connects to the router via Wi-Fi, the WeCo BMS cannot also connect to KF1 via Wi-Fi — the BMS must connect to the customer's router Wi-Fi instead

Instructions

1. Contact KanEL support to set up the Wi-Fi connection

2. In the future, Wi-Fi setup will be possible through the installer app

Wi-Fi bridge

A very reliable alternative when wired connection is not possible. Strongly recommended over regular Wi-Fi. These setups are cost effective, can work for 5–10 years without service, and can be easily replaced without reconfiguration.

Choosing the right product

Condition

Frequency

Recommended product

100% line of sight, distance under 20 km

5 GHz (M5/5AC)

Ubiquiti Nanostation or LiteBeam

Not 100% line of sight, distance under 500 m

2 GHz (M2/2AC)

Ubiquiti Nanostation or LiteBeam

Note: If there is no line of sight, the connection must be verified at each installation.

Instructions

1. Ensure the product is compatible with the specific use case

2. Pair receiver and transmitter units per the manufacturer's manual

3. Use shielded network cables and connectors to protect against lightning damage

4. Connect KF1 WAN port → receiver unit's PoE injector (any network cable)

5. Connect receiver antenna unit → receiver unit's PoE injector (shielded cable + shielded connectors)

6. Connect customer's router LAN port → transmitter unit's PoE injector (any network cable)

7. Connect transmitter antenna unit → transmitter unit's PoE injector (shielded cable + shielded connectors)

8. Check KF1 WAN indicator light and installer app (may take a few minutes)

Troubleshooting

If the WAN light is black, blinking green, or solid green with "WAN connection offline" in the installer app:

1. Test at transmitter side: Remove the network cable from the transmitter, plug it into a laptop, run a speed test at bredbandskollen.se. If it works, go to step 2. If not, replace the cable and test again. If still failing, contact the customer's ISP.

2. Test at KF1 side: Remove the network cable from the KF1, plug it into a laptop, run a speed test. If it works, contact KanEL support. If not, replace the cable and test again. If still failing, replace the Wi-Fi bridge.

External Wi-Fi antenna

Use when the KF1 is installed in a different building than the customer's router. Can work for distances up to 100 metres.

Not recommended — same limitations as regular Wi-Fi: connection fails if customer changes SSID, password, router, or ISP.

  • If KF1 connects via Wi-Fi, the WeCo BMS cannot also connect to KF1 via Wi-Fi — connect BMS to the customer's router Wi-Fi instead

  • Ensure the customer's main router is located near a window for best reception

Instructions

1. Contact KanEL support

2. In the future, Wi-Fi setup will be possible through the installer app

Mobile connection

The KF1 ships with an internal SIM card that activates automatically if no other connection is available. This is intended as backup only.

  • The internal SIM is not tied to any operator — it connects to whichever network has the best signal

  • For mobile as the primary connection (when neither wired nor Wi-Fi is possible): an extra 4G/5G router, up to 2 external antennas, and an extra SIM card from KanEL are required (for security reasons). The built-in modem then serves as secondary. Contact KanEL support.

Recommended external mobile modems

Scenario

Recommended modem

City location, 50+ Mbit indoors on phone

UMR Ultra — place indoors near window (supports external antenna)

Small town, poor signal or overloaded towers

Zyxel LTE7480-M804 LTE — mount on outdoor wall or antenna mast, point toward best cell tower

Big city, customer already has a 5G modem (Telia etc.)

Try connecting to the existing modem

Instructions

1. Contact KanEL support

2. Check KF1 mobile status and signal strength indicators + installer app (may take a few minutes while device connects)

Troubleshooting

  • Green connection light (solid or rapidly blinking) + 3 or more signal LEDs + no errors: Connection is stable. No further steps needed.

  • Red or yellow connection light with good signal strength: Only 2G/3G connection possible. Contact KanEL support.

  • Rapidly blinking yellow or red connection light: Poor reception. Run a speed test on your phone next to the KF1 at bredbandskollen.se, then contact KanEL support:

  • Alternating red/green every 500ms: SIM card problem. Contact KanEL support.
